In this module, Trend Hunter's Chief Content Officer, Armida Ascano, takes us through the 18 Megatrends of the New Normal. Armida deep-dives into the 18 Megatrends Matrix through the lens of the phases of Crisis, Chaos, and Recharting. The goal is to help map out which Megatrends are most relevant in times of uncertainty.

Understanding Patterns of Opportunity
At Trend Hunter, we have identified six methods of thinking that can lead to more creative solutions. These are called Patterns of Opportunity, and they include acceleration, cyclicality, reduction, redirection, convergence, and divergence. We have found that successful ideas often come from one of these six ways of thinking.

Introducing the 18 Megatrends Matrix
We realized that our Patterns of Opportunity were working from the top down and didn't have anything that worked from the bottom up. That's why we developed the 18 Megatrends Matrix. We took our six Patterns of Opportunity and held them up against the content on Trend Hunter to identify how each of these patterns was manifesting through consumer desires. The 18 Megatrends are patterns that identify how specific evergreen consumer desires are manifesting in the market.

The Crisis, Chaos, and Recharting Framework
Our Chaos-Induced Recharting Framework starts with Path Dependency, which is the idea that in times of stability, consumers make decisions based on predictable things, such as what's available to them or what's familiar. In times of crisis, people focus on their base-level needs, such as safety or security. In the Chaos phase, consumers consolidate the way they used to do things with the way they have to do things with the guardrails set in place by the crisis. After Chaos, consumers settle into behaviors that may have resulted from crisis and chaos, but they're no longer conscious reactions to them.

Mapping the 18 Megatrends to the Phases
Armida will split the 18 Megatrends into those which are most relevant during the Crisis, Chaos, and Recharting phases. This mapping helps identify which Megatrends are most relevant during times of uncertainty. By understanding how consumer desires manifest during these phases, businesses can adapt and pivot their strategies to stay ahead of the curve.
